still the same old me... drunk mootoo tiger

I left Oslo this morning for Prague, to begin the last leg of my traveling around Europe before going home. And on my way to the airport on the airport express train, I saw the same familiar scenery I'd seen so many times in the past 4 months or so. But today of course, I realised it would be my last time taking this same 22 minute train passing Lillestrom on the way from Oslo Central Station to Oslo Gardermoen airport. This train in which the staff made the same announcement welcoming you aboard the Flytoget and reminding passengers to take note of safety guidelines in both Norwegian and English. Where the orange and grey uniformed staff would make their rounds at least once during the ride to make sure the walkways were clear of luggage and that all their passengers were happy.

And then I remembered with clarity the first day I took this train, with apprehension, jet lag and in awe of the beauty of the Norwegian natural landscape. In my first 22 minute ride on this Flytoget, I got a preview of what was in store for me for the next 4 months of my life, and I would say I haven't been disappointed. I got to see Norway in its full summer glory, I have seen how the sun makes the autumn leaves glow even redder, and on the way to the airport today I saw magnificent endlessly white hills and frost-covered trees. In between, I have seen so much more, many of which were firsts in my life, and made some wonderful friendships. And then I wonder why I had ever considered pulling out of coming to Norway just because it hadn’t been my first choice.

I miss Norway so much now. Forget its exorbitant standard of living or that its stores don’t open on Sundays. My 4 month fling has turned into a sort of love affair and while I miss Singapore too, it has been really hard saying goodbye to this place which I have been glad to return home to from my travels.

In about 17 days, I will have to say goodbye again, this time to Europe. I will take the plane home on my own, as I had come more than 4 months ago. And I know I will be feeling another bout of nostalgia then, remembering how I had also with uncertainty, taken the plane alone to a country so different from my own, and finding my way to my hostel pulling almost 42kg of luggage with me.

I could go on reminiscing about all the wonderful things I’d done and experienced here but just thinking about it makes me tear. And I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow, to continue seeing and experiencing beautiful Prague in Christmas season. So for now, I’m going to stop.
