the human scent
9:12 AM On a stroke of luck, I picked up Perfume : The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind, a German writer, while browsing Orchard Library a few weeks ago and unoccupied at work, devoured it greedily in a single day. I don't claim to read a lot (at least most of what I read can be classified as chick-lit, light and easy reads) but Perfume can count as one of my favourite books. Of course some of Marian Keyes' books line up beside it, but that certainly does not do justice to the beauty of Patrick Suskind's work, and it can only be blamed on my limited reading. I was reminded of it reading Tuesday's papers on travel, where they featured an article on Provence (pronounced Proh-vahns) and the journalist took a trip to Grasse, the renowned perfume capital of the world, which was not by coincidence, mentioned in the book. And I would love to read it once more, this time for its language, because the last time I was too distracted by its plot and too eager to turn the page. If I write anything about the story at all I'm sure to disfigure it with my pathetic language. So please go borrow it if you've the time, read the synopsis and you'll be hooked.
