paralysis
2:22 AM I think I know how it feels like to be paralysed. sense of loss, shock and helplessness all mish-mashed together. a novel sensation of being strengthless to control the motions your leg makes. its as though your leg has been severed from the rest of your body. you think of calling out for help but you're too shocked to even scream. all you can do is hug your leg and try and hoist yourself into a more comfortable position. No, I didn't suffer from stroke today. But for a split second when I stood up from bed today, I thought I'd lost my right leg. There's a slight sprain in my right foot to vouch for it and it hurts when I walk or rotate my foot but the pain's been bearable fortunately. Perhaps if I was asked to play a wheelchair-bound patient now I might do a pretty decent job. I just crumpled to the ground, my entire body weight crashing down on a fragile foot. Unlike the numerous falls I practiced as MeiYu, I couldn't react in time to cushion the fall with my hands. And as I sat on my bed, willing sensation to return to my leg, I was genuinely frightened, that I might not feel anything in my limp, lifeless limb. That something more serious could be happening to me. It wasn't just the usual numbness that occurs when I maintain a position for longer than my leg can take. Thank goodness the familiar prick of pins & needles began to make my leg itch. It was a moment worthy of cold sweat anyway. Sigh I shall from hereon appreciate the ability to walk. 2 comments |
