Project Superstar is right on track.
12:28 AM I got home from dinner tonight in time for my dad to turn on the teevee and flip to The Prelude of Project Superstar, the talentime show on Channel U - its the Chinese equivalent of Singapore Idol. Honestly the quality of some of the audition round contestants are really cringe-worthy. Not that I'm in any position to comment but at least I recognise that I lack the voice to become a bangin Superstar and don't ashame myself in front of the judges and the rest of Singapore. But I guess if their goal is to have their 5 minutes - sometimes even less - of fame, then they sure have achieved it. Maybe they had streaks of tears+mascara running down their cheeks but well, they DID manage to appear on national tv anyhow. But attention/fame-seekers aside, it was very heartening to see that there was a small group of 4 - I think - visually-impaired contestants who went for the auditions. The other contestants should all feel ashamed of themselves. Accurate pitch accompanying a soothing melodious voice. The kind you'd hear playing on a CD. Maybe better than some artistes even. Nevermind that they don't look like they walked straight out of an album cover. Afterall, isn't it a trend these days for artists to hide behind caricatures - like Zhou Hui and the Ou DeYang guy. BUT, there is this skeptical, realist part in me that doubts they would emerge a star even if their vocals were the most outstanding amongst all their other competitors. The world is rarely fair and sometimes talent doesn't triumph. American Idol has proven this twice already. First LaToya London and then Vonzelle Solomon. Two very talented diva-to-bes whose voices have many bowled over but who were eliminated to make way for people who stood out because of their more outstanding personality - Fantasia Barrino & Bo Bice - or just because they were sweet young things (who both happen to be blonde) - Diana DeGarmo & Carrie Underwood. Humans are visual creatures afterall. The judges have a trickier job this time. They should judge the visually-handicapped contestants on the same grounds and with the same measure as any other contestant. But as I was watching one of them being told he could not advance to the next round, I wondered if it was too cruel, if they should have cushioned the blow by informing him in a less direct manner. Afterall, they are less fortunate than the average person. Would we be unsympathetic by denying them a chance to fulfill their dream when they've already lost so much compared to us?But it would be even more cruel to him if the judges tried to sugarcoat the truth or if they'd let him through on the basis that he was handicapped, wouldn't it? I'd say though, I think that acknowledging their singing talent is a pretty commendable step towards accepting and integrating the visually-handicap into our lives and letting them compete with us on a level ground. Like letting the handicapped compete in the usual Olympics instead of the Paralympics. However, will this be a case of raising their hopes up high only to let them fall down, and this time harder than usual? The loss of sight immediately disadvantages a person and limits his activities significantly. Would a visually-impaired person be able to cope with the demands of being a superstar? The autograph sessions, the concerts, the photo shoots. These are all part and parcel of a celebrity's life, no? To me, the moment that unfair stroke of fate befell them, the possibility of them becoming a celebrity was instantaneously precluded. But then this is my personal opinion. Perhaps I can be proven wrong so I guess I should continue to stay tuned to Project Superstar. It shows again tmr at 8pm on Channel U so watch out for it alright. Rather, listen out for them. 0 comments |

I like to be around people with whom I don't have to care if they think I'm crazy drinking bak kut teh from a straw.
I've never taken the reverse bungee, never been to the US, and never dyed my hair pink.
And I want to go on an misadventure once in my life.
